La Digue’s Assumption Feast Is Calling. And You’ll Want to Be There!

If you’ve been looking for a reason to hop over to La Digue this August, consider this your sign! The island’s much-loved Assumption Feast is happening on the 14–16 August, bringing together three days of faith, culture, music, family fun, food and plenty of island spirit.

This year’s theme, “Celebrating the Spirit of La Digue: Faith, Culture, Unity,” really says it all. The feast is one of La Digue’s biggest annual celebrations, welcoming locals, visitors from Mahé and Praslin, and travellers from overseas to experience the island’s unique Creole culture and legendary hospitality.

And a lot is happening!

The celebrations officially get underway at La Passe jetty on Friday, 14 August, before the action moves to L’Union Estate. Expect traditional performances, gospel music, local artists, live bands and entertainment into the night, with Leko Tanbour, Leko Bwa Ver, Mazezarin, Sheriff Band, DJ Baya and more taking to the stage.

There’s plenty for the little ones too, with a dedicated children’s corner featuring games, music, bouncing castles, popcorn and candy floss. So yes, parents can enjoy the festivities while the kids have their own space to have some fun.

Saturday, 15 August, is the big day of the feast. The religious celebrations take centre stage with the solemn Mass for the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary at 9.30am, followed by a procession and the blessing and official opening of the island’s new Virgin Mary grotto beside the church.

Then it’s time to get involved!

L’Union Estate will turn into a playground of traditional and family-friendly activities, from beach volleyball and dominoes to coconut husking, tug of war, pillow fighting, arm wrestling, bicycle-rim races, egg-and-spoon races and even greasy-pole competitions. There will also be plenty of fun challenges where you can test your skills, or simply test your luck guessing the weight of a piglet or cake!

The idea is simple: don’t just watch, join in. Organisers are bringing back some of the interactive games associated with past Assumption celebrations, giving both locals and visitors a chance to become part of the action.

And when the sun goes down, the party continues.

Saturday evening brings more local performances, the Miss La Digue pageant at 8pm, and then something extra special, fireworks at 10pm. It’s a new addition to the La Digue celebrations and is set to give the island a chance to enjoy the spectacle live rather than watching fireworks from afar.

Sunday keeps the island energy going with cycling races, sports finals, family games, sega, more greasy-pole challenges, youth performances, school bands and the final prize-giving ceremony. The celebrations will wrap up with a moutya performance by Leko Bwa Ver, followed by DJ entertainment and the official closing, with organisers already looking ahead to “Rendez-vous 2027.”

Of course, you can’t have a La Digue feast without food, crafts and local businesses being part of the story. Food vendors, artisans and small businesses will have space to showcase their products, giving visitors the chance to enjoy traditional food and pick up locally made treasures along the way.

Just remember, while there’s plenty of fun to be had, the Assumption Feast remains first and foremost a religious celebration and an important part of La Digue’s cultural identity.
