Supporting SSPCA: Why They Need Our Help Now More Than Ever

If you’ve ever followed the work of SSPCA, (Seychelles Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) you’ll know just how much they do for cats & dogs across Seychelles, quietly, always with dedication, and usually with very limited resources.

Right now, the SSPCA is facing one of its most challenging moments.

On 27 January 2026, the organisation was the victim of a robbery at their premises. During the incident, petty cash, weekly income and donated funds that were being counted were stolen. The office was ransacked, camera system monitors were taken, and staff lockers were raided, leaving the shelter in what they’ve described as a critical situation.

Donations Are Urgently Needed

The funds that were stolen were essential for keeping the shelter running day to day, including:

  • Staff salaries
  • Shelter operating costs
  • Food, medical care and supplies for the animals

With these funds gone, cash donations are urgently needed to ensure SSPCA can continue caring for the cats and dogs that depend on them.

Coins for Cash: Turning Donations into Something Usable

SSPCA regularly receives foreign cash donations from tourists, including coins. The challenge is that banks in Seychelles do not accept foreign coins, which means this money can’t be deposited or used directly.

To solve this, SSPCA runs a simple but effective initiative called “Coins for Cash.”

Here’s how it works:

  • SSPCA collects foreign coins donated by visitors
  • Other tourists, locals or businesses can exchange those coins
  • In return, they donate the equivalent value in usable cash

SSPCA is currently looking for cash in exchange for foreign coins in the following currencies:

  • Seychelles Rupees (SCR)
  • US Dollars (USD)
  • Euros (EUR)
  • British Pounds (GBP)
  • South African Rand (ZAR)
  • UAE Dirhams (AED)

It’s a practical way to make sure no donation goes to waste.

It’s Not Just About Money: Volunteers, Fosterers & Adoptions

Support doesn’t always have to be financial. SSPCA is always looking for volunteers and foster carers to help with daily care, socialising animals, and giving them the attention they need while waiting for permanent homes.

They also encourage both locals and tourists to consider adopting. Yes, visitors can adopt cats and dogs too, and SSPCA can guide adopters through the process.

Adoption doesn’t just give an animal a home, it gives them the love, security and life they truly deserve.
