Seychelles CONFEJES Project Plans Artificial Reef Using Glass Bottles

Engaging children in the rich and diverse marine life of Seychelles and its conservation through scuba diving and coral restoration is the goal of a project submitted for funding under CONFEJES this year.

This innovative initiative, led by Vicky Durand, is one of 10 projects submitted by the end of June, a significant increase from just one last year. The surge in submissions is attributed to a local training session held in March, aimed at young people. Two trainers from CONFEJES led the weeklong program, attended by around 30 participants, some of whom work directly with youth.

CONFEJES—Conference of Ministers of Youth and Sports of the Francophonie—is an intergovernmental organization based in Dakar, Senegal, dedicated to promoting youth, sports, and leisure in French-speaking countries.

Begitta Jeannevol, the CONFEJES focal point for Seychelles, stated that the training not only enhanced the skills of young entrepreneurs but also opened up new career opportunities. “Participants now have valuable tools and renewed motivation to turn their ideas into innovative projects,” Jeannevol said.

Dingam Donon-Horbe from CONFEJES’ headquarters, one of the trainers, emphasized the importance of fostering entrepreneurship among young people. He noted that projects aligning with national priorities, sustainable development, and wealth creation are especially encouraged.

Durand, a diving and coral conservation instructor based on Praslin, explained that her project focuses on coral restoration and conservation around Praslin’s reefs. “At the heart of this project is the creation of an educational artificial reef, primarily made from recycled glass bottles,” Durand said.

The project centers on three key areas: youth engagement and awareness, recycling and environmental protection, and enhancing marine ecosystems.

“By involving young students from Praslin schools in this restoration effort, we aim to instill environmental stewardship and raise community awareness. Recycling glass bottles not only reduces waste but also transforms them into a valuable resource for marine ecosystems,” Durand added.

The artificial reef will be located within Curieuse Marine National Park, near Praslin.

“Our partnership with the Seychelles Parks and Gardens Authority (SPGA) ensures scientific rigor and careful data collection to support the project’s success. We envision this reef becoming a renowned attraction, drawing visitors and marine enthusiasts globally, thereby enhancing both environmental education and tourism,” Durand concluded.
