New Coastal Watch Group for Seychelles Beaches

The Danny Faure Foundation officially launched the Community Coastal Watch Group (CCWG) – CoastSnap Programme on Tuesday morning at Beach Shak Bar & Grill, Beau Vallon. The event was attended by the Founder and Chairman of the Foundation, Former President Danny Faure, alongside the venue’s owner and invited guests.

This exciting new initiative introduces a global community beach monitoring programme to Seychelles. Using the CoastSnap method, members of the public can contribute valuable data on beach erosion and shoreline changes—simply by using their smartphones.

Originally developed in Australia in 2017 by the University of New South Wales Water Research Laboratory, CoastSnap turns ordinary mobile phone cameras into powerful coastal monitoring tools. The programme has since expanded to over 600 locations in 21 countries, and Seychelles is now proudly among them.

The CCWG aims to involve the local community, the general public, and visitors in this innovative and long-term shoreline monitoring effort. By taking a photo or video at a designated CoastSnap station and uploading it to the database hosted by the University of New South Wales, participants will help track seasonal changes and sediment movement on Seychelles’ beaches.

It’s simple to get involved—just follow the instructions on the information board at the CoastSnap station, snap a picture, and you’re instantly contributing to science and conservation!

The Foundation plans to install more CoastSnap stations across Seychelles, including Praslin and La Digue, and is actively seeking partnerships with local organisations to support the expansion.
