Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2026: Walk Together, Raise Awareness and Show Your Support
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, often known as Pink October. A month when people around the world come together to raise awareness, encourage early detection and, importantly, show support for everyone whose life has been touched by breast cancer.
Here in Seychelles, the Soroptimist International Club of Victoria is inviting the community to come together for a special Breast Cancer Awareness Beach Walk at Beau Vallon on Monday 19 October 2026.
With the message “Admiring the survivors, supporting the fighters, honouring those taken,” the walk is an opportunity to show solidarity, remember loved ones and stand alongside those currently facing breast cancer. And what better place to do it than together, walking along one of Seychelles’ best-known beaches?
Join the Beach Walk at Beau Vallon
The Soroptimist International Club of Victoria Beach Walk starts at 5pm on Monday 19 October.
Participants will meet on Beau Vallon Beach, opposite Sables d’Or Hotel, before setting off together.
The event continues a long history of breast cancer awareness activities organised by Soroptimist International Club of Victoria. An earlier Beach Walk for Breast Cancer was held at Beau Vallon in 2014, when the organisation encouraged women, men and children to walk together in solidarity while raising awareness and funds for the cause.
For 2026, the message remains just as important: come together, raise awareness and support the people and families affected by breast cancer.
Why Breast Cancer Awareness Month Matters
Breast cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women worldwide. Around 2.3 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer globally in 2022, according to the World Health Organization.
But Breast Cancer Awareness Month isn’t simply about statistics. It is about encouraging conversations.
Awareness can help people recognise changes, seek medical advice and access diagnosis and treatment earlier. The WHO’s Global Breast Cancer Initiative places particular emphasis on health promotion and early detection, timely diagnosis and comprehensive treatment.
It is also a month to recognise the emotional and social impact of breast cancer, not only on those diagnosed, but also on partners, children, relatives, friends and colleagues.
Know Your Normal
One of the important messages during Breast Cancer Awareness Month is to be aware of your own body and seek medical advice if you notice an unusual breast change. Changes can include a new lump or thickening, changes in the size or shape of the breast, skin changes or dimpling, changes around the nipple or other changes that are unusual for you. These symptoms don’t automatically mean cancer, but they should be checked by a healthcare professional.
Screening recommendations can vary according to age, individual risk and the healthcare system, so anyone concerned about their breast cancer risk or screening should speak to a healthcare professional about what is appropriate for them. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can significantly improve outcomes.
Wear Pink and Walk Together
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is recognised around the world by the pink ribbon, and the Beau Vallon walk is a simple way for people in Seychelles to be part of the movement. Bring your friends, family and colleagues. Wear something pink if you can and head down to Beau Vallon for 5pm.
You don’t need to have personally experienced breast cancer to take part. You can walk for someone you know, in memory of someone you’ve lost, in support of someone going through treatment or simply because you believe raising awareness matters.
Sometimes showing support can be as simple as turning up and walking alongside someone else.
