Heart and History – Seychelles’ World Cup Journey Ends with Proud Moments
Despite a spirited performance, the Seychelles national team has ended its 2025 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup journey after a tough 10-2 defeat to Japan on Monday evening at the Beach Soccer Arena in Mahé.
Going into the match, Seychelles needed a win by more than three goals to keep quarter-final hopes alive. But they were up against a strong Japanese side also fighting for progression—and it was Japan who dominated the match to secure their spot in the knockout stages.
However, the night was not without its moments of pride for Seychelles. The two goals scored by Team Seychelles were both netted by 16-year-old Lienal Bibi, the youngest player in the entire tournament. His opening goal sent cheers throughout the stadium and brought a wave of emotion for the young star.
“For me, this is a great accomplishment and I made my country and coach very proud,” said Bibi after the match, visibly moved by the experience.
This World Cup appearance was Seychelles’ debut on the global beach soccer stage, and while the results didn’t go in the team’s favour, the experience was rich with lessons, exposure, and unforgettable moments.
Japan’s win sees them finish second in Group A, advancing to the quarterfinals alongside group leaders Belarus, who won all three of their matches. Guatemala also exits the tournament after a heavy 12-3 loss to Belarus.
Elsewhere, Paraguay picked up their first win with a 9-5 victory over tournament newcomers Mauritania, though both sides have also been eliminated.
While Seychelles’ World Cup journey ends here, the passion of the fans, the commitment of the players, and the emergence of new talents like Bibi have left a lasting mark on the tournament and the future of beach soccer in the islands.
